High School Cyber Patriots – November 29, 2011

Just months before I was sworn in as a Board Member, I read about the Buena students who participated in the Cyber Patriot competitions.  Having a programming background, this was of extreme interest to me and I wondered how we could get a team from the Tombstone USD.  Much to my amazement Mrs. Berzinski, Math Teacher at the High School, was the teacher advisor for a Tombstone Team, this year.  Mrs. Berzinski participated in a presentation by Lt. Col Ross Lampert at the summer Cochise Instructional Technology Conference.

I took some time to meet with the students during their practice.  Yes, practice isn’t just for the athletes of sports, but also the athletes of programming.  I met several young men and one young lady who are part of the two teams at Tombstone USD.  One team is made of JROTC and one is open to non-JROTC members.  The students told me of the program with great excitement.  They are given system to download and told there are a number of problems they must find and fix with the system.  Unlike the Geeks at Geek Squad the students are given only 6hrs to solve the problem at hand.  They work as a team to search the Internet to find solutions, create programs to fix the problems, and, of course, the person at the controls does the loading and testing of the programs to fix the computer.
