I attended both the Symposium in Tucson and Sierra Vista, mostly because it is part of the duties of my day job as Coordinator of the Statewide Instructional Technology Project. The symposiums are taking place around the state to spread the word about the Governor’s plan for education in AZ. Both Symposia started with the welcome address from the County Schools Superintendent, then a message from Governor Brewer delivered via video and her Director of Education Innovation, Rebecca Gau. Mrs. Gau presented the attendees with information about the Governor’s plan for education reform. The purpose was to provide information regarding AZ Ready and Regional Education Centers. AZ Ready is the Governor’s Education Reform plan to support College and Career Ready Students via four pillars: Standards and Assessment, Great Teacher and Leaders, Data Use, and Support to Struggling Schools. A representative from the Dept of Education followed with a message from Superintendent Huppenthal in support of the Governor’s plan. More details of the four pillars were presented by others throughout the rest of the morning. Time was given for participants to give input as to how the Southern AZ Regional Education Center can best support and connect schools in achieving the goals set forth in the Governor’s reform plan.
