This session was a review of what we had learned at the New Board Orientation Meeting, back in December. The Plan, Prepare, Act, Reflect, and Celebrate Cycle was reiterated. This time, we reviewed the steps specific to the work of the Board and those of the District personnel. See diagram below.
As a School Board we give the district its vision and its ability to translate that vision into action. Measuring and communicating how well the vision is being accomplished and championing the vision via advocacy is to be done year round. We had a brief discussion about the Vision we would like to adopt. The first draft of our vision was for students to know where they are going and be in charge of their own learning. This was during a work session, therefore until we vote at a formal Board Meeting it is not official.
We continued learning about our role as a Governing Board.
- Keep students as the focus of the work of schools
- Ensure student achievement and well being
- Provide safe and caring school environments
- Establish policies and procedures to guide decision making and commutating to others
- Recruit, employing and monitoring the performance of the Superintendent
- Ensuring fiscal accountability
- Determine strategic priorities
- Regular monitoring and evaluation quality of education
- Engage the public
- Engage in political advocacy
Our non-delegable duties are:
- Employment and dismissal of employees
- Submission of policy questions to binding arbitration
- Cannot share decision-making power with other boards (groups)
This was a short quick training session. It was a good review of information already learned and was beneficial in solidify the roles and duties I have as a School Board Member.
